Recent Library Additions

Here are a few recent additions to our library. We've actually added in over 100 new books in the last few months, so we'll be highlighting a few of them over the next few weeks. Come check them out!

The History of Magic in the Modern Age by Nevill Drury
Covering over 2000 years of history, this 300-page volume provides a good overview of western magic starting with gnosticism and wrapping up with present day prominent occult figures.

The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries by W.Y. Evans-Wentz
This is a classic investigation of fairy lore in Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Europe (mostly Brittany). It includes accounts of fairy encounters and lore as recorded by the scholar Evans-Wentz at the beginning of the 20th century when belief in fairy magic was commonplace and unadulterated bu modern popular culture.

Solitary Wicca for Life by Arin Murphy-Hiscock
Written by a Montrealer, this is a 201 book that builds upon the basics of Wiccan practice and ritual to deepen your personal practice and magical techniques.

Montreal Pagan Resource Centre presents: Pagan Art Expo 2010

The Montreal Pagan Resource Centre (MPRC) is proud to host Montreal’s first Pagan Art Exposition. Our goal is to showcase artistic work created by pagan artists from our community, but also to give these artists a venue in which they can present their work to a larger audience.

The art exposition will be held above the MPRC space on the 3rd floor (1928 Ste. Catherine Street West) from Friday April 23rd to Sunday April 25th, 2010.

The artwork can reflect pagan themes, but this is not a requirement. In the spirit of promoting artists within our pagan community, we are looking to work with artists who themselves follow a pagan spiritualistic path.

We must receive your application no later than April 12th 2010. You can submit your completed application, along with your $20 processing fee, to Le Melange Magique (1928 Ste. Catherine Street West).

Roles and Responsibilities

All artistic submissions will be reviewed by a jury that consists of MPRC volunteers. The MPRC jury reserves the right to choose the art works as they see fit. The MPRC jury will NOT select art that promotes violence or hatred of any kind.
All artwork must be delivered to the exposition space by the artist on April 23rd and must be removed from the exposition space by April 25th.
All art work must be ready for display.
All pieces must be firmly attached to a base.
For three-dimensional pieces, we suggest that the artist provide proper display supports.
IMPORTANT: Artists are responsible to insure their own art works. The MPRC is NOT responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged works.

Application Fees and Sales
The MPRC is asking for a $20 processing fee per artist who wishes to submit their work for the Art Exposition. If the artist’s work is not retained for the exposition, the artist will be refunded their $20.

The MPRC requires 10% of any sales made during the Art Exposition, which is to be collected at the end of the exposition (Sunday April 25th).

Recent Additions to the Library

We've been busy cataloging and shelving a lot of new donations to the MPRC library. Here are three of the recent highlights. We'll be letting you know of others in the coming weeks.

Ritual Magic by E.M. Butler
First published in 1949 by Cambridge University Press, this book explores ritual magic from the pre-Christian era right up to the turn of the last century, including the careers of some notable magicians. It is well referenced and quotes extensive from original documents.

Italian Witchcraft by Raven Grimassi
Written by a long-time and well-known teacher and practitioner of the Craft, Italian Witchcraft explores the roots of Italian Pagan traditionand how it survives today. It includes rites, rituals, correspondences and spells. Some of the historical information is footnoted and there is bibliography.

Principles of Druidry by Emma Restall Orr
This is a nice quick introduction to a spiritual path that more and more people are exploring. In it Emma Restall Orr, who is Joint Chief of the British Druid Order, gives a little bit of histroy and lays the foundation of how Druidry is practiced today.

If you'd like to take a look at these books, or any others in the library, they are available for onsite consulation whenever the MPRC is open.

Divine Relief was a huge success!

Divine Relief, the fund-raising event for Haitian relief, was held today on the 3rd floor of Melange Magique from 12pm to 4pm. This event was sponsored by Montreal Diviners, Catharine Allan, in conjunction with the MPRC and sponsored by Le Melange Magique.

In just four hours, the event raised over $1300, which was given to the Red Cross. Thanks to a commitment from the Canadian government to match any donation amount made to the Red Cross, this increases our donation to over $2600!

The Montreal Pagan Resource Centre itself contributed $65 by selling duplicate books from the community library. The MPRC was also able to contribute $200 on behalf of the Montreal Pagan Community.

Thanks to all who supported this event!

Many People today and throughout history have been on a quest for spiritual or religious enlightenment/ascension. The meaning behind this process has so many variations for different people.

Do you relate to ascension as being the shift of consciousness to another level; finding the true relationship with oneself; or the reuniting with the “source of all”?
Are their stages of evolution that we must go through prior to reaching higher levels of consciousness?
Does enlightenment come with the ascension into higher “realms”?
Is ascension a process of “grades” to go through or simply a moment in which we claim “I’m ready, the time is now.”?

What are your opinions on Christopher’s Penczak’s theories of Ascension (from his book Ascension Magick) such as:

- Literal Ascension: The literal shift of our bodies and souls from this physical plane of existence (3D) to another plane of reality?

- Posthumous Ascension: Occurs when one completes all necessary “levels” of this world and no longer required to return to the cycle of reincarnation?

- Enlightenment: A continuous state of consciousness and in communion with the divine. (ego ascension)

- Next Age Ascension: What does it mean to enter a New Age? Leaving the zodiac Age of Pisces into Aquarius… how do you relate?

- Returning to Source: After having gone through the cycles of life, we return to the source of life. The universe folding “back” into the divine.

- Personal Initiation: The levels of ascension of one’s personal consciousness through experiences on the spiritual path. This includes all life experiences, from pleasures to painful illnesses. Etc.

- The Unknown and Unknowable: It’s a perception thing. Ascension an enlightenment cannot be truly known through our current perceptions or at it’s opposite will be known “depending” on our perceptions…

- Symbolic Ascension: Ascension is not about going anywhere, but about a deeper expression of the spiritual life on a daily basis. Influencing the world around us simply by living a better life. A combination of the personal initiation and the unknowable. Inner and Outer realities being reflections of each other. What separate the two are our perceptions.

CUPS Monthly Pub Moot for February 2010

Come and hoist a pint, a coffee, or a cuppa tea with fellow pagans in a comfortable pub setting. John William Waterhouse Paintings Exhibit

Got this from a friend of a friend and I'm passing it along here:

"Thought I'd pass along that there's an exhibit of paintings by John William Waterhouse at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts until February 7th. I was there for a day trip yesterday and had a great time.

If you (or any of your pagan-sympathetic friends) are in Montreal it's well worth checking out. I thought it might have special resonance for you due to the mythological/mystical subject matter. There's also a pretty cool 28 minute film called "OOOM" by Melissa Auf Der Maur (Smashing Pumpkins, Hole) that is sort of based on his paintings that is part of the exhibit (has a mystic theme with some vikings thrown in)."

The Longest Night, The Brightest Light

Note: This is a post I had on my LJ (jdhobbes) that I was asked to repost some place more public so that it could be shared. I hope you enjoy it and Happy Yule.

Tonight is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. I'll be holding my all-night vigil with my candle and I will hopefully still be awake at dawn to greet the sun. Happy Yule everyone.

Since November, I've been thinking about this idea of darkness and our relationship with it. Mainstream thought does not have many nice things to say about darkness, equating it with being lost, containing forbidden/dangerous knowledge, or hiding terrifying monsters.

Speaking from a purely North American mindset, I can certainly relate to these ideas. At 40 years old, I must admit to a certain amount of fear of dark places (I still get a cold chill down my spine when I turn my back on my parents dark basement and try not to dash up the stairs). When I think of friend Guy who ended his life in 2008, I imagine that he believed himself to be alone in a dark place, unable to see the people who would have carried him back to the light. The truth of it was that he wrapped himself up in his own darkness so that no one would see his pain until it become all consuming, and in the end, consumed him.

Darkness is terrifying, it is the great deceiver, and dogs our heels all of our lives. But this post isn't all doom and gloom... I promise!

As a storyteller, I recognize that dark places can be challenging and transformative if you keep your wits about you. The hero often needs to cross a dark wood, deal with shady characters, or face his own darkness before he can carry the day (and often the princess). Without the darkness to challenge us, how would we grow? It is the process of fighting our way out of those dark places that we become stronger, more confident that we can achieve more than we thought we could. But in so doing, we always carry some of that darkness with us, sometimes as a badge, sometimes as a reminder.

This past summer at KG, Thornhaven honored me by asking for my help on designing and executing a Men's Ritual that moved away from the Warrior archetype. We explored the three rings of self-identity, where I had to deal with the centre of one's being (you can read more that in my August 6th post). This place is especially terrifying because the darkness at the centre of your being forces you to face yourself in the most honest of ways, a brutal type of honesty. People spend their whole lives filling it with distractions to NOT have to face this type of reality.

But as I mentioned before, darkness can be a deceiver as well. It can trick you into believing that you are alone and disconnected. When you look out into the darkness and see nothing and no one, you may believe that you have no one to call friend, or worse, there's something out there that means you ill. But the truth of it is that there are others in that darkness looking for you as well, wondering why they are alone too.

The only way that you can reveal yourself is by sharing your light. People share their light with each other all the time through acts of kindness, generosity, and beauty. And by sharing our light with others, we increase our own light and the light of others. This isn't some kind of hippie-drippy, granola idea: it's reality. If the light of one candle can reveal one person, the light of many candles can reveal a group.

Our mainstream society has tricked us into thinking that there is some kind of power and prestige in walking alone. This is a lie. No one gets anywhere in this life without the support of family, friends, teachers, mentors, strangers, enemies, etc. All of these people carry us through our lives, and we in turn carry them. We share our light with their light, making navigating the darkness of the unknown that much easier.

So on this eve of the Winter Solstice, I wish to thank you for sharing your light with me over the year. I look forward to sharing your light in the New Year. Namaste.

On this, the longest night, remember that the darkness can deceive you into thinking that you are alone, disconnected, but this is not true.

If you are feeling alone and disconnected in this darkness, you only need to share your light with another person and you will discover that you are not alone. The more light you share, the more people you will find, and the darkness won't seem as dark or as lonely. In fact, you might discover how bright it really is.

Pagan Sunday Brunch for November/December 2009

** IMPORTANT **

As you know, November's Pagan Sunday Brunch was moved to the weekend of the Yule Fair, but the spot I had picked (Oxford Cafe) has gone out of business on Ste. Catherine Street. Curses!

So a new spot has been reserved: Resto Burgers & Benedicts in the Pepsi Forum. We'll see you there at 10am next Sunday!

What should have been the last Sunday of November, we have moved it to the following week so that you can also enjoy the Yule Fair at Melange Magique. Also, we have changed the venue so that you can easily walk up to street to attend the Yule Fair after breakfast.

Come join your fellow pagans for brunch and socializing. No level of pagan experience is necessary, but as long as you can wield a knife and fork like a guru master, you'll be respected and admired by your peers.

This is a kid-friendly event, so feel free to bring your offspring.

BUS/METRO/WALK:
Get to Atwater metro (Green line), cross Atwater from Alexis Nihon, and enter the Pepsi Forum. Its the first resto inside.

Yule Fair 2009: The Program of Events

The Yule Fair for 2009 is fast approaching (December 5th and 6th) and we've been working on completing the program of lectures, workshops, and events for it.

Click here to see a PDF of the somewhat final draft of the program. There are still a couple of bios missing, but very little of the program should change between now and the weekend of December 5/6.

The MPRC discussion nights are held every first Thursday of the month.

Topic: The Power of Dreams

What happens to our minds when we are sleeping? What has science to say concerning the explanation of dreaming? How often do you remember your dreams? Have some dreams felt they had more “meaning” to them than simply randomness? Did its “fabric” seem different than regular ones? How valid are book references to dream interpretation versus your own personal understandings? Do you believe dreams can be prophetic, or simply a subconscious influence? What role does the subconscious play? What is your opinion on the theories of collective prophetic dreaming? Do you believe in a collective consciousness in which we tap into when we sleep? What is your take on lucid dreaming? Do you believe that dreaming is an alternate reality which can influence our being and experiences? Can you control your dreams? Is it all simply "wishful thinking" that dreams have messages to provide us?

Join us for the Public Yule ritual at Melange Magique on December 6th at 6pm (Sunday night). This ritual will take place after the Yule Fair in the Vendor area (after everyone has cleaned and cleared the room).

This Winter Solstice, we will be sharing our light as we wait out the longest night of the year. Participants are asked to bring a small candle that can be placed safely on the floor.

After the ritual, there will be a small potluck feast, so feel free to bring a small offering of food that is easy to share with others. Also, bring your feast gear (cup, plate, fork) and any ritual clothing (or your regular clothing is good too).

It's coming! It's coming once again! The MPRC and Melange Magique are proud to announce that the 2009 edition of the Montreal Yule Fair will be taking place on December 5th and 6th on the floor above the Melange Magique (1928 Ste. Catherine Street).

There will be vendors, workshops, lectures, storytelling, and a public Yule ritual led by the MPRC's president Hobbes (on Sunday, December 6th, 6pm). Invited guests include:
